The Leventis Art Gallery, in central Nicosia, a collaboration between Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and our Practice, sought to fulfil three roles concurrently: to create a state-of-the-art Gallery, to supplement this with a number of supportive functions and facilities, and to do so with a complementary array of both public and private open spaces.
While the building is premised on a rather simple diagrammatic organisation, it was subsequently ‘eroded’ to forge both this array of courtyards and gardens, as well as covered balconies – all of which present meaningful occasions for outdoor living attuned to the local climatic conditions. This strategy was furthered by either small vertical apertures, or long-horizontal ones which are protected by perforated metal screens.
For its part, the Art Gallery forms the centrepiece of the Project. Here, effort was placed towards a close coordination between museology and architecture, while doing so without losing a strong connection to the site – thereby contributing positively to the city’s culture and its public realm.
