Cyclotron – Makarios Hospital & Thalassemia Clinic

Three of our Practice’s Principles are ‘Adaptive Problem Solving’, ‘Commitment to Long-Term Relationships’, and ‘Purpose-Driven Innovation’.

Collectively, these three demonstrate an understanding of the broader socio-political role of the Architect, as an agent in identifying creative, beyond-the-conventional, solutions to complex problems, while doing so by proficiently addressing the requirements of programme, budget and employer. Indeed, our Practice has a long history of expanding and re-developing its earlier work – a testament to both the immanent drive for change underpinning urban life and our Practice’s longevity.

A case in point is the Cyclotron Facility that is established for and adjacent to the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, in Nicosia. Given that the Project entails highly specialised equipment using strong electromagnetic fields, the Project is almost-entirely organised underground, thereby ‘retaining’ the Green Spaces in which it is immersed. Its sole physical presence is registered in the guise of a semi-submerged façade along the entrance route to Makarios Hospital.
