This mountainous vacation house outside the village of Spilia, seeks to tactically integrate to its context in multiple ways. Firstly, in formal terms, it is carefully attuned to the terrain’s dramatic topography, by reversing the conventional domestic sectional articulation – as the public road (and, hence, the parking space) is on top, which leads below to the main living quarters, which are themselves above the bedrooms.
Secondly, and because of the preceding, it frames panoramic views of the site’s breathtaking natural setting from almost all primary spaces. Thirdly, the project is closely coordinated with the site’s key geomorphological features – especially some giant rocks – in a manner akin to Oscar Niemeyer’s Casa das Canoas.
Finally, the project seeks to exploit its high-altitude woodland milieu – both in terms of climatological conditions, and in terms of its remoteness. Being a holiday home for all the seasons, it strives to be operative as a tranquil retreat both during the occasional snowfall in winter, and in the summer’s intense sunlight.
