This residential project involved the conservation of and extension to a Listed House in Ayios Andreas, Nicosia, which is about a century old. Given that the historic structure was generous in size and occupied a substantial part of its plot, the extension was forcibly divided into two parts – one of Servant Spaces, while the other of Served Spaces.
The proposed Served Spaces consist of only one meaningful room and its associated small access, which are an actual extension of the listed house’s secondary entrance along its less-prominent street-front. On the other hand, the Servant Spaces are several in number and are organised as a singular free-standing structure along the plot’s northern (less favourable) border.
Given that the historic building engendered an ornamented and consolidated architectural theme, our project sought to respect and enhance this theme with its tactical juxtaposition to a different aesthetic – one that is contemporary and reserved – which strives for an overall sophisticated simplicity.
