Kimonos Street Apartments B

The building is located in an area which used to be farmlands, mostly olive groves, owned by the church. A considerable land south-west of the building, which is still under church ownership, has been retained as green fields.

The geometry of the building is determined by the site, as the intervention covers fully the buildable area of the plot. The form is generated by an envelope which is folded on a different elevation at each floor. Interior and exterior spaces, as well as voids between floors are incorporated as a whole within the envelope. The use of different materials for each element (smooth white plaster for the envelope, rough grey for the walls, etc) make the architectural approach more vivid. On the ground floor a fare-faced concrete pedestal organizes the entrance, encloses the pilotis and forms the plot boundary.

The first and second floors contain one apartment each, while the third and fourth floors contain a duplex. In a subversion of the conventional residence, the living and dining spaces of the duplex are located on the higher level (fourth floor), where they relate to a generous veranda. This veranda, the uncovered part of which is surrounded by the covered, is directed towards the south-west to enjoy views of the green fields.

Beyond the sustainable design of spaces, the use of passive systems and appropriate materials, the building makes use of geothermal energy.
