The site for the new Regional Headquarters of the Cypriot Confederation of Workers (SEK, a Labour Union) in Paphos is situated along a major communal artery in an area rapidly transforming from a low rise suburb into a primary commercial spine. The significance of this communication artery has lately been enhanced by its inclusion in the new route that links the city centre with the network of regional motorways. The project attempts to make the most of this new urban reality as well as the very public character of the brief.<\/p>\n
The proposal pursues the creation of a new public open space along the road-front, which can accommodate both big assemblies on special occasions as well as more casual everyday gatherings. This prospect is incited by the adjacent cafeteria that operates both within the building but also in the piazza itself, as well as the proposed commercial facilities which are situated along the main street.<\/p>\n
Beyond these concerns, the organizational articulation of the proposed intervention attempts to give prominence to the Headquarters building, while not taking away from the commercial viability of the shops. Within the Headquarters building, the office spaces are located on the upper floors allowing for the public spaces of the Union to animate the ground floor maximizing their interrelation with the piazza.
