The renovation and expansion works of the building that accommodates the “Arodaphnousa” Palliative Care Center and the offices of the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society aimed to increase the number of patients’ rooms, as well as the addition of support areas to the hospital.<\/p>\n
The basic design principle was the creation of a building that inspires respect and that offers a calm and pleasant environment for patients and their relatives, but also the staff of the Society. The spaces have been grouped together so that almost all patient rooms have access to the gardens, and staff offices have unobstructed views of them.<\/p>\n
With the overall study carried out, the parts of the building with different uses and of different construction phases now acquired a single shell, with a contemporary look. The three levels and the different sides of the building were treated differently. At the basement level the concept of “solid” dominates over the “void”, while the choice of grey colour on the exterior surfaces emphasizes this volume, which functions as a grounding element, on which the rest of the building is rooted. On the contrary, the main feature in the two upper levels is the repetition of vertical, grey elements. In addition to the uniformity of the facades, these elements create an interesting game of light and shadow, whilst contributing to the integration of the building into the urban fabric. The single-storey volume of the main entrance was treated similarly, with the vertical elements here being intensified, while differing in size and construction material.<\/p>\n
The views towards the garden on the south side are characterized by extroversion, as the extensive use of glass on the first floor offers unobstructed views of the green and abundant natural light. On the ground floor, the canopy that surrounds the inner courtyard on three sides has its reference to the \u201ctypology of the monastery”, while creating a shaded and sheltered sitting area, which is essentially an extension of the patients’ rooms. Finally, the choice of white colour for the walls on the south side was imperative in order for them to function as a background for the vegetation, and the shadows created on them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
